Austria Tourism
Austria tourism offers many of the top sights and sounds that travelers could ask for. The streets ring with melodies of Mozart’s symphonies and the smells of apple strudels fill the air. The people of Austria may seem reserved and quite weary of strangers but do not worry, they will welcome you with open arms as soon as you get to know them. Something as small as a “hello” or “thank you” will help you out a lot in this country. If you are looking for arts in Austria, you find that a majority of the time, musical arts will be present on the streets as the country is well known for its musical composers. Austria is dominated by mountainous areas and you will find meadows and forests that cover most of the countryside. If you are looking for national park, you are in luck as Austria offers the largest national park in Europe. The country is environmentaly friendly and they do everything in their power to recycle absolutely anything and everything they can. The country has to be one of the cleaner places I have visited. I urge you to read on and discover more about this beautiful country.
Accomodations
When planning to stay in Austria, reservations are recommended to be made well over two months in advance as busy seasons include Christmas, Easter, and the summer seasons. I was not aware of this but, when booking a room, after the room is booked; you are legally bonded to that room. It will be very hard to get your money back if you decided to change dates or cancel. Be sure to know the exact dates you plan to travel on and stay. Hostels tend to be a little more flexible in this situation but the chance of you having to change hostels is still very high as the more people you have the more priority you get. Most of the information for prices and rates around Austria can be found at the local tourist office and some of these offices can make reservations for you for a small fee. The cheapest hotels start around 25 Euro and go up to 40 Euro for a single room. Double rooms will cost anywhere from 35-60 Euro. To save you some money, I recommend Junge Hostels Austria for you accommodations. They offer prices that range from 13-20 Euros per night.
Austria Activities
Austria tourism offers some of the best downhill skiing and snowboarding that Europe has to offer. The best skiing activities can be found in the city of Tribol and Vorarlberg. If you decide to ski, you can expect to be paying anywhere from 20-38 Euro for a daily pass. You can rent equipment from most of the ski establishments for as little as 13 Euro, depending on what kind of equipment you need. Austria also offers an abundance of hiking trails for you to explore. The local tourists officies will have up to date maps and the best trails outlined for you to explore. Some other activities that you could participate in when traveling to Austria include swimming and going to spa’s. You will find that the Austrian population is highly active and will not hesitate to drop everything and go out to enjoy the great outdoors. Cycling is also a big activity in Austria and they do offer bike rentals at most outdoor facilities for as little as 10-20 Euro’s a day.
Getting Around
Austria tourism has many transportation options. There are many ways to get around the country and here I will list a couple.
Cars
Many of the car rental businesses that are offered in your home country are offered in Austria. SIXT, Hertz and many other car rental services are offered to tourist. However, to get the best deal, your best choice would be to ask for local car rental agencies, as they will be usually cheaper. They do have a minimum age of 19 years for smaller vehicles and 25 years old for larger vehicles such as trucks and cars that are more expensive. When you rent a vehicle, you will have to pay a tax to drive on the road and put a special sticker on your windshield. In addition, you will have to drive with the headlights on at all times. This should not be a problem as most new cars come with this option.
Bicycle
This is by far one of the cheapest ways to get around Austria. You can find bike rental organizations all around Austria and you could expect to pay anywhere from 10-30 Euro’s a day for a bike. If you want to rent a bike for cheaper prices, you may want to look at renting in Vienna. Bikes can be put on trains, which are nice and allows you to travel to many destinations in Austria in a small amount of time. If you want to put your rental bike on faster trains, you can expect to pay 6.80 Euro’s a day. In addition, slow trains cost 3 Euro’s a day or 22-23 Euro’s a week. Be sure to note that you will only be allowed to put your bike on any train if there is enough space.
Train
The train system if also cheap compared too many of other European countries. The trains are in ok condition and there are discounts available. Be sure to ask the tourist office about the Vorteilscard that can reduce fee’s up to 30%.
Sights To See
Austria tourism has many sights for tourist to enjoy but here are a few that you should definitely see when you visit this beautiful country
Kaiser apartments and Sissi Museum: Here you find the reminents of the late Empress Elizabeth and a free audio guide tour of the different pieces of her life. The museum is open from 9AM-5PM Monday through Friday and the cost is 7.50 Euro’s for adults and 5.90 Euro’s for kids.
In Vienna, you could also see a free Holocaust memorial that was the first of its kind in Austria.
Austria Currency
What is Austria currency? Austria is one of the many countries that have adopted the European Euro. This currency is stronger than the U.S. dollar and you may want to keep this in mind when you are shopping. This is especially when you use your debit/credit card at local shops. In addition, when you eat out, the recommended tip for your restaurants waiter is 10% of what your full bill costs. Make sure to give it directly to the waiter and not leave it on the table.
Austria Capital
If there is one place in you should visit when you explore Austria tourism, it is the Austria capital of Vienna. This is what I call the hub of the tourist as it offers the most activities and information for you to get. The inner city offers an abundance of activities and museums to see as well as tourist offices for you to visit. Many accommodations can be found in the city and if you are new to traveling to Austria, this city will offer you the most for your money.
Business Hours and Austria Visa
One of the fantastic things about Austria tourism is the shop hours. Shops will usually be open from 9AM to 6PM Monday to Friday and 9-1 on Saturdays. Some grocery store's in the country often open as early 6AM and the doors close between the hours of 730-745PM.
When traveling to Austria you will be happy to know that you will not need an Austria visa if your are traveling from the U.S., Canada,European Union, or New Zealand. You are only to stay in the country for no longer than 90 days.
