Below I am going to break down some of what I and many others have experienced when traveling to Europe and what you could do to avoid becoming sick while you are staying in Europe. The Plane Believe it or not, most of you will suffer from what is known as jet lag. This is due in part to traveling through many time zones. You will feel fairly drowsy and dehydrated. That you will travel through when going to Europe. This is especially true when you’re traveling from the U.S. To help avoid jet lag, you want to make sure you adjust your sleep schedule before you get on the aircraft and also adjust your eating schedule. I found adjusting my sleep and eating schedule days before I traveled worked best. Also be sure to drink lots of water especially when you’re on the aircraft to avoid that terrible feeling of being dehydrated. There are some medications out there that supposedly help with jet lag but, I found adjusting sleep and eat schedule and drinking lots of water to work best. Touring Europe While you’re staying in Europe, keep in mind that you will be eating and drinking things that you may not be used to. Make sure you eat in small portions when trying something new to get used to what you’re eating. Also it is a good idea to pack some stomach medication from home just in case. Medicine in Europe You will be happy to know that most of the medicine that is offered at your local pharmacy is also offered in most of Europe. I say most of Europe because some countries’ such as Bulgaria do not offer the same types of medication found in the U.S. such as Tylenol. The best thing for you to do is make sure you pack some medication, at least one week’s worth, just so you will be prepared. Health Care The good thing about Europe is there is great healthcare available for tourist just in case of emergencies. If you’re feeling sick and have no medication, a good thing to do is go and see the local pharmacist. They can offer over the counter medication that will help you feel better. Eastern Europe is still developing under the European Union and pharmacist can be hard to find. Make sure to pack medication if you plan on traveling to Eastern Europe just in case of an emergency.
