Facts on Greece

Here are some interesting facts on Greece.

Greece is located at the southern part of Europe and has islands that surround it. The islands combined with the main landscape make up over 50,000 square miles and have a population of over 11 million. Greece is surrounded by islands on three sides. It is a hop skip and a jump away from Asia and Africa. Its coastline is quoted as being one of the longest of any country in Europe.

Greece is geographically separated by three different sections which include Epirus, Thessaly, and Corinth Canal. One of the highest mountains in Greece is Mount Olympus, which in history, housed the Greek gods. Another mountain is Mount Parnassus which is Greece’s second highest mountain and is located right on the historical site of Delphi, which is the god Apollo who is famous for its oracle. A final mountain is Mount Athos which is where monasteries of the Greek Orthodox Church first formed.

Athens is the largest city and the capital of Greece, and has a population of over 750,000. The second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki, has a population of over 363,000. Other large cities in Greece also include Piraeus, Patras, Volos, and Larissa.

The seas that surround Greece are filled with islands that make up over 9,000 square miles of Greece’s total land area. One of the most well known islands, Aegean is Crete, where the famous doctor, Hippocrates, the modern physician of medicine, was born.

A notable fact is Greece’s rivers cannot be navigated by boat. They include Alikam, Axios, and Strymon which form the line between Greece and Turkey. Greece’s lakes are kastonia and Ioannina which are the largest in Greece.
