History of Greece In A Nutshell

The history of Greece goes back thousands of years. Greece is by far one of the oldest civilizations known to man, in the world. The beginnings of Greece started in 3000 BC with the inhabitants called the Cycladic that ruled during this time. In the 11th century this civilization collapsed and by 800 BC famous cities such as Athens and Sparta arose. In 205BC the Roman Empire turned to put its influence on Greece and over the next centuries, the country would experience roman influences that would still prove well and alive in Greece Today. WWI brought Greek troops to a fight on the Allied side and refugees from the Turkish territory began to revitalize a rather weak Greek economy. In 1936, General Metaxas was appointed as prime minister of Greece and their began a fascist rule. Metaxas succeeded in creating his vision of a Greek version of the third Reich, an opposed Italian domination and refused to let many other allied troops to descend upon Greece. In 1941, Greece fell to Germany and this led to a civil war in which lasted until 1949.

Greece received help from America soon after the civil war ended, and recovered. An anticommunist government was implemented and a law was passed that lasted until 1962. Soon after, a group of high ranking military members staged a resistance in 1967. This eventually led to a distinguished group that inflicted brutality and political chaos amongst Greek nationals.

Greece entered the European Union in 1981, and was headed by Andreas Papandreou’s. Papandreou’s promised removal of all US air bases in Greece and also insisted that he would remove Greece from NATO. None of these promises were met. Later a man by the name of Kostas Simitis was appointed prime minister in 1996. He adopter the European Union and Greece saw the Euro currency arrive in 2002 and in 2004 Olympic Games were held in Athens
